Main Government Hospitals
Shanghai has more than 500 public hospitals, so it should be relatively easy to find a local hospital near your residence. While foreigners are technically not allowed to set foot into a hospital without a special foreigners’ ward, it can be done as long as you are willing to endure long lines and put up with aloof service.
If you decide to go to a local hospital without a foreigner clinic and can’t speak Chinese, be sure to bring a translator or Chinese-speaking friend. Even the majority of the personnel at VIP foreigner branches will often only speak Chinese. Nevertheless, there are expats that stay loyal to their local hospitals and especially enjoy the economical prices when compared with the costly foreign-owned clinics.
