Approach your Driver License in Shanghai

 

  • It is suggested that before you consider getting a license you ride in a car for a few weeks to get your bearings and a feel for the flow of traffic. The many bicycles, motor scooters, and pedestrians make driving considerably different from most countries.

  • To get a driver’s license, you will need to prepare the following certificates and copies:

  • * Passport


  • *Shanghai Residence Card


  • * Original residence Permit in China and its copy


  • * Foreign driver’s license or international license. This license must be translated by an official translation bureau.

    The process is as follows:

    1. The original, foreign driver’s license must be translated by the Shanghai International Studies University, Dalian Xi Lu, and Tel: 6587-7585 (50RMB).
    2. Go to the Ministry of Automobiles, 179 Qingchun Lu in MinHang district (Tel: 64987070-54280), where you will be given two application forms which must be filled out in Chinese, have a digital photo taken, hearing and eye test. (110 RMB)
    3. With all the certificates and documents mentioned above, and your digital photo you must take a written test at the Ministry of Automobile. If you fail the first time, you must wait for two weeks to retry.

    The test is multiple choices and is in English. The license may be picked up the same day. The test is given on Monday to Thursday 9am – 5pm, 4pm on Friday. (55 RMB)
